Get To Know What A Ductless System Does

When it comes to keeping a home cool in the summer and warm in the winter, a ductless system can be the way to go. This HVAC system is often referred to as a mini-split system. It is like a centralized HVAC system without the need for ductwork in the walls and floors. If you're new to the ductless system, we're going to share with you its components and how it works. Plus, we'll go over the benefits of a homeowner having one in their home.

The Parts of a Ductless System

Ductless mini-split systems have both indoor components and an outdoor compressor unit. Inside, you'll find wall-mounted units. These each have a remote where the homeowner can adjust their temperature settings. Each indoor unit connects to the outdoor compressor unit using copper piping.

HVAC professionals drill a three-inch diameter hole into the side of the home for the copper pipe. Then, it's encased in conduit all the way to the HVAC compressor unit for aesthetic appeal. Depending on the number of indoor units that a home has, the home may need more than one outdoor compressor unit.

How Does a Ductless System Work?

We all need air conditioning in the summertime. The ductless HVAC system works by pulling in air through the wall unit via an internal fan. The warm air passes over evaporator coils that have refrigerant inside of them. The heat from the air becomes cooled by the refrigerant. The now cooled air goes back out into the room.

The heated refrigerant goes to the outdoor compressor unit via the copper piping. Once it reaches the compressor unit, the refrigerant goes through the condenser coils. This is where it removes the heat from it. Once removed, the refrigerant goes back inside to repeat the whole process. The ductless unit will run until the internal temperature reaches the desired settings.

When it comes to the wintertime, the ductless system will work in reverse. The heat from outside will go into the refrigerant. The refrigerant is then pumped inside the wall-mounted units. From there, the blower fan will disperse the heat. Understanding the ins and outs of ductless systems can be challenging at first.

Who Can Enjoy a Ductless System?

Ductless mini-split systems are best for homes where there is no existing ductwork. It can be expensive to rip off drywall, install ducting, and then repair the drywall. For this reason, it's best to suggest a ductless option. These mini-split units can also be a great option for homeowners that are adding an addition. These additions shouldn't have any connections to the existing ductwork in the home.
